At RODA marketing, we love to help business owners succeed with our marketing services, and, JUST AS IMPORTANTLY, we like to contribute to your business’s success even if you’re not hiring us for our services.
We believe that one of the best ways to succeed at business, or in life, is to set clear goals, focus on them and work towards them.
This blog is about how setting “small” goals can help you reach and accomplish “larger” goals.
You may have heard of the BHAG – Big Hairy Audacious (or Ambitious) Goal.
It’s a “strategic” business statement created to focus on organization on a single medium-long term organization-wide goal which is audacious, likely to be externally questionable, but not internally regarded as impossible” (Wikipedia).
Having huge goals can be absolutely awesome, propelling you to unimaginable heights – such as starting a new business and starting a family at the same time. At times, they can make you feel burnt and spent before you even reach the first milestone. This is because BHAG’s tend not to contain realistic measurements.
Tim Ferriss, bestselling author and angel investor, shared with Creative Live co-founder Chase Jarvis the following productivity tip: “The easier you make your goals, the more likely you will have outstanding results in line with your BHAGs.”
IBM, once the most powerful computer company in America, gave its sales reps outrageously low quotas. What happened as a result shocked many – the sales reps actually achieved amazing sales, since the low quotas made them feel confident enough to start the cold calling campaign and gave them the momentum to keep making calls after the initial quota was reached.
This principle is based on giving yourself a completely achievable goal, and trusting that when you reach it, you’ll be motivated enough to go even further. When the goal is too big, you can experience hesitation or paralysis instead of motivation.
At RODA marketing, we make it a practice to set bite-sized goals we can easily work towards, and love celebrating our team’s successes, large or small.
What bite-sized goal can you and your team accomplish today?
